Optimising the Future of Boating: Lithium Battery Installation on a Riviera 56 Flybridge

At RMC Electronics, we take pride in delivering tailored solutions to enhance the boating experience. One of our recent projects involved transforming the energy system of a Riviera 56 Enclosed Flybridge, owned by Rod Wellsted, into a state-of-the-art setup with lithium battery technology. This article details the project’s challenges, outcomes, and advanced technology used to create a more efficient and enjoyable experience for long-term cruisers like Rod.

The Challenge: A Tired System in Need of Modernisation

Rod approached RMC Electronics with a clear goal: to upgrade his boat’s original lead-acid battery configuration. The existing system required frequent replacements and was unable to keep up with the demands of extensive use. As seasoned cruisers, Rod and his family spent significant time aboard their Riviera 56, cycling through the batteries at a high rate.

His main request was twofold:

  1. Substantial battery capacity to reduce the frequency of generator use.
  2. The ability to power onboard air conditioning systems through batteries, eliminating the need to constantly run noisy generators during overnight stays.

The Solution: A High-Capacity Lithium System

Battery Bank and Capacity

To meet the owner’s needs, we designed and installed a 990 amp-hour (Ah) 24-volt lithium battery bank. This system ensures that while cruising, the battery bank charges efficiently via the alternators of the vessel’s main engines. Upon anchoring at their destination, Rod and his family can enjoy uninterrupted comfort through the night, including powering cabin air conditioning.

Smart Generator Integration

A key feature of the setup is the automatic generator start system. When the battery levels approach 25%, the generator kicks in to recharge the batteries. This system provides peace of mind by ensuring sufficient power levels while minimising generator runtime.

Multiple Charging Sources for Maximum Efficiency

The new system incorporates several charging methods to ensure reliable and rapid recharging:

  1. DC-to-DC Charging: Each engine alternator is connected to the house batteries through 60-amp DC to DC chargers, delivering up to 120 amps per hour while cruising.
  2. 24V 5000W Inverter/Charger: A 120-amp charger output serves as the bulk charging source when connected to shore power or the generator.
  3. Standalone Charger: An additional 100-amp charger supplements the system and when operating in conjunction with the inverter/charger provides fast and efficient replenishment of the batteries.

By maximising charging capabilities, we reduced the generator’s run time, making the system both energy-efficient and user-friendly.

Advanced Equipment: Victron Energy Integration

The entire system is powered by Victron Energy components, chosen for their reliability and seamless integration. The interconnected setup allows all components to communicate, providing a centralised hub for monitoring and control.

Key Features of the Victron System

  • Real-Time Monitoring: All critical information—battery capacity, charge status, power consumption, and system warnings—is displayed on a single, easy to interpret, graphical screen.
  • Custom Alerts: Users can configure alerts for low voltage or capacity, as well as load-shedding features to optimise battery usage.
  • Remote Access with VRM Platform: The Victron Remote Monitor (VRM) allows Rod to access data from anywhere via PC or mobile device, as long as the boat has internet connectivity. The system logs data in the cloud, offering insights into energy consumption, charging trends, and diagnostic information for any potential issues.

Enhancing the Engine Room: Practical Additions

The project extended beyond the battery installation. Given the family’s long-term cruising lifestyle, we designed custom racking around the batteries to accommodate shelves and toolboxes, maximising storage in the engine room. This thoughtful addition ensures that essential tools and equipment are organised and accessible during voyages.

The Outcome: A Game-Changing Upgrade

Rod’s Riviera 56, named Taj, has undergone a remarkable transformation. The new lithium system offers:

  • Extended battery life and reduced reliance on generators.
  • Comfort through uninterrupted air conditioning during overnight stays.
  • Enhanced control and visibility with the Victron system, allowing for smarter energy management.

Rod and his family’s confidence in the upgrade is evident, re-establishing a sense of reliability in the vessel and enjoying a seamless experience with their new system.
